Nigeria’s Ese Brume Finishes 5th In Women’s Long Jump Final

Nigeria’s medal drought at the Rio 2016 Olympics continues as Ese Brume finishes fifth in the women’s Long Jump final on Thursday.

The 2014 Commonwealth Champion jumped 6.81m to finish in the fifth position, which was not enough to earn her a spot on the podium for a medal. The event was won by 2015 World Champion Tianna Bartoletta who added an Olympic gold to that accolade, jumping a personal best of 7.17m in her 5th attempt.

American athlete Bartoletta narrowly defeated her compatriot Brittney Reese, who lost her title after finishing 2nd with a mark of 7.15m. Ivana Spanovic won the Bronze after jumping to a new record for her country of 7.08m.

Brume entered the Long Jump final after finishing third in Group B contest on Tuesday, but failed to challenge for medals against major contenders in the final.

Historically, Nigeria’s only medals in long jump were won by Chioma Ajunwa who won gold for Nigeria in Long Jump event in the Atlanta Olympics in 1996 and more recently by Blessing Okagbare who won bronze in the Beijing 2008 Olympics.
